| Cat diabetes is similar to type 1 or
type 2 diabetes in humans.
In type 1 diabetes the cat is not producing the
insulin that is needed to convert food into energy. So the cat may
suffer from low blood sugar levels and will need insulin to be injected
on a daily basis to maintain a normal blood sugar level.
In type 2 cat diabetes your can may be
insulin resistant. This means that your cat may be producing enough
insulin to convert food into energy but the cells are resisting its up
take. So the cat will suffer from high blood sugar levels, because the
glucose stays in the blood stream and keeps the blood sugar high.
As in human with diabetes, your vet may prescribe
a careful diet, daily exercise and medications.
Animals that are used for research can now get an
implant of insulin, which last any where from 40-50 days. This means
that you do not have to give the cat daily injections.
These implants have a very slow release of insulin
and are very convenient and humane for the animals.
